PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN JUNIOR ACHIEVEMNT (J.A) ESWATINI AND PIGG’S PEAK TOWN COUNCIL ON AREAS RELATED TO YOUTH AND WOMEN ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT

Introduction

Traditionally, local authorities or town councils are empowered to carry out the following functions, as stated in the Urban Government (1969);

However, over the years, the role of local governments or town councils has changed to cover the following areas; promoting economic development and creating partnerships for the benefit of the town’s resident, to mention but a few. It is for this reason that Pigg’s Peak Town Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with J.A Eswatini on 26th June 2019, to promote entrepreneurship.

The role of Pigg’s Peak Town Council and Junior Achievement in promoting local economic development

Following the receipt of financial and technical support by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development in 2013, from the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (C.L.G.F), Pigg’s Peak Town Council was tasked with the responsibility of implementing projects aimed at stimulating economic development. It is for this reason that the organisation has identified about fifty six (56) beneficiaries, that is the youth (in and out of school) and women for entrepreneurial skills development.

Considering the track record and technical expertise of J.A in youth entrepreneurial skills development, Council felt it was logical to enter into a long-term relationship with J.A, in order to achieve this noble project objective. Through this partnership and considering the critical role played by small and medium enterprises in employment creation, we are confident that the target population will graduate from running small businesses to thriving business.
