WOMEN EMPOWERMENT: TOWARDS ENDING GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

PPTC CEO addressing the women with words of empowerment.

The alarming effects of Gender Based Violence (GBV) may lead to self-harm, depression and suicidal attempts call for individuals to unite and stand against this act of human right violation. It is against such a background that, on the 08th June 2022, Pigg’s Peak Town Council (PPTC) in partnership with SWAGAA, celebrated the international women’s day with about 200 women from Pigg’s Peak under the theme “men and women in total condemnation of gender-based violence”.

International Women’s Day is celebrated on the 8th March every year, however, with having noted the rise in GBV cases reported in Pigg’s Peak, the two partners decided to host such an event as a platform to discuss issues of GBV, share experiences and come up with solutions regarding the topical issue.

Speaking during the event, the Town Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Mzwandile Ndzinisa said, “the day is celebrated because we are not there yet. In short, we recognise how far we have come, especially with regards to gender equality and how far we still have to go. It is because of government’s concerted efforts in ensuring gender equality that we have women occupying leadership positions, in both the corporate world and political sphere”.

Ndzinisa further stated that in Pigg’s Peak there is a network of women, called Umtfombo women’s network, aimed at building the capacity of women in local government; in politics, business, mentorship, and more.

Lutsango from Pigg’s Peak constituency were also part of the event.

They shared their gratitude for having such a platform to share experiences on GBV issues among each other. Delisile Dlamini who spoke on behalf of Lutsango elaborated on how they, as women, become victims of GBV in their marriages due to lack of sexual satisfaction by their husbands. The women encouraged each other to stand firm, believe in themselves and be committed.

Also present during the event were Hhohho region Member of Parliament Nokunceda Bujela, AMICAALL Director Sibongile Ndlela-Simelane and members of the Royal Eswatini Police Service.
