Piggs Peak Council

FESTIVE SEASON SHOPPING- BE MINDFUL OF THIS

As the festive season is upon us, Pigg’s Peak Town Council would like to remind residents of Pigg’s Peak and the general members of the public to remain vigilant while doing their shopping. They should ensure that they check the expiry date before buying food items. Shop owners are also encouraged to remove expired products from their shelves and maintain proper hygiene within their shops.

Consuming expired food may result in significant health risks to consumers, such as foodborne illnesses and allergic reactions. The risks of consuming expired products are prominently high during festive celebrations where people gather in large numbers. The Town Council is mandated to conduct health inspections in shops within the town’s boundaries as per the Public Health Act, 1969 and the Public Health (food hygiene) Regulations of 1973.

Inspections of food outlets have since been intensified by the local authority as the festive season has approached which resulted in condemnation of expired food items which were then destroyed. In the event that members of the general public come across expired food products, they are urged to immediately contact the Town Council on 7802 5201 or use the official WhatsApp line (7836 3437) so that action can be taken against the shop owner.

Before buying products, check the following:

Expiry date – Pay attention to the expiry dates of food items especially those that have been discounted as they may be likely nearing their date of expiry. Packaging – Do not buy items on damaged packaging wherein there are signs of dents, leaks or bulges as such might be contaminated. Storage condition –Avoid purchasing items that have been displayed in direct sunlight, excessively warm areas or near cleaning materials.
