On the 25th June 2022, Pigg’s Peak youth hosted the first ever Pigg’s Peak youth awards event, which was held at the Gobolondlo hall.

A total of 35 young people were nominated for different categories in the awards, and 17 of them were able to scope prizes for their excellent work.

The award winners were presented with certificates of excellence and money as a token of appreciation and encouragement for the efforts they put into their businesses and into their self-development.

One of the key challenges outlined in the Council’s 2019-2024 Integrated Development Plan (IDP), is the high rate of unemployment especially among the youth which then leads to depression and substance abuse.

Therefore, PPTC supports such a youth initiative since it encourages more young people to work hard in bettering their lives, while saving them from engaging in unlawful practices.

Colisile Tfwala from the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) who was a guest speaker during the event said the spirit of hard work shown by the youth of Pigg’s Peak was going to open for them great opportunities that will not only benefit individuals but even the society they live in.

Speaking during the ceremony, Deputy Mayor Sibongile Magagula noted how the outbreak of the corona virus together with its snowballing effects, such as job losses and depression, meant that Pigg’s Peak town council had to be innovative in addressing challenges affecting the youth. “It is for this reason that the organisation continued to partner with other organisations, such as Junior Achievement, in order to enhance the business skills of the youth” she said. The Deputy Mayor further mentioned that the efforts shown by the youth of Pigg’s Peak was a clear indication, that they were taking responsibility for their future.

Event organiser, Kwazile Masimula said she was grateful to all those who worked tirelessly and contributed to the success of the day and noted that recognising the work done by young people was important for a society that wants to experience development.

Sponsors of the youth awards included Pigg’s Peak Town Council, Buy Cash Hardware, Deputy Mayor, Ekhaya Funerals, among others.
