While making her remarks on behalf of the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor Councillor Lungile Dlamini said as a town they were heartbroken yet concerned with the prevailing cases of gender based violence in the country. “In the past few weeks, the media has continuously reported news relating to gender based violence where such kind of violence ended up with loss of lives. This means we need an urgent solution to end gender based violence and I believe an awareness campaign like this one is a great start for the town”, she said.
Other speakers including members of the general public stressed on the fact that gender based violence was discriminative, hence everyone is expected to take responsibility to protect one another and maintain peace. The campaign started off with a march across the town centre with Pigg’s Peak Town Council employees singing songs to emphasize that the organisation condemns the inhumane acts of violence including brutality, and other human rights violation, but rather, appealed for peace and security among every individual, families, and communities.
