The Ministry of Health through NERCHA and partners have commemorated this year’s World AIDS Day under the theme “Let Eswatini Communities Lead in Ending AIDS”. The ceremony was held in Pigg’s Peak, Killarney Stadium on the 24th November 2023 wherein more than ten organisations had their information stalls raising awareness about HIV Prevention and Testing.
Speaking during the event as the guest speaker, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, His Royal Highness Prince Simelane said it was imperative for everyone to participate in ending AIDS as we remember those who died because of the disease and encourage those living with HIV to live healthier. The Minister said “today we also raise awareness against HIV stigma and discrimination and I hope everyone will ensure that there is equal accessibility of services for all in the communities”. While making her closing remarks, Councillor Dr. Glory Msibi who was representing the Mayor, Sipho Shongwe said as a town they were humbled and proud to be the host of such a big event in the region.
She said the town was committed in the fight to end AIDS through programmes outlined in the Town Council’s five-year strategic plan (IDP) aimed at responding to health-related issues including HIV/AIDS. Internationally, the World AIDS Day is commemorated on December, 1st. The ceremony started off with an awareness march across the town. It was, as well, marked by relevant and informative speeches and edutainment, graced by the presence of the Hhohho Regional Administrator, Princess Tsandzile. Amongst others present were USAID Country Director, Mr. Chris Detwiler and UNAIDS Country Director, Mr. Betru Woldesemayat.
